Joanne has completed two start-ups recently - Carmana and Sunday.
Carmana is a customer-to-customer online platform for used cars in the SEA region, debuting in Thailand last year. Carmana provides one stop services to buyers and sellers of used cars including ownership transfer service, car inspection, financing, and insurance services, disrupting the existing business model which lacks transparency and favourable customer experience.
Sunday is an insurtech which just launched in Thailand August 2017. It offers innovative, customised and service oriented general insurance products such as motor, health, personal accident and travel through a cutting edge end-to-end technology platform such as machine learning & image recognition, as an enabler to deliver its key USPs - Smart, Easy & Affordable.
Joanne began her career with Munich Reinsurance Company, Munich, Germany where she received training in reinsurance, (particularly in property, casualty and life) and in the Integrated Risk Management department. Subsequently, she joined Deutsche Bank, London as an Associate, Securitization team within Credit Risk Management function in 2007, where she was responsible for the securitization portfolio, with exposures mainly to the RMBS, insurance-linked securities and CDO asset classes.
Upon her return to Malaysia in 2010, she joined Kurnia Insurans (M) Bhd as Risk Adviser in the ERM department whilst taking on a Kurnia Asia Group role to oversee the operational transformation of the insurance businesses in Thailand and Indonesia. Subsequently, she led the corporate exercise on the RM1.6bln sale of Kurnia Insurance Malaysia to AmBank/IAG. In 2012, she took the helm as Group CEO of Kurnia Asia, spearheaded the overall rebranding exercise of Kurnia Asia to KSK Group. In 2013, she led the privatisation exercise of KSK Group.
In late 2013, she set up KSK Land, a property development company from ground up which is now developing 8 Conlay, a fully integrated mixed used luxury commercial development, sitting on a 4-acre land at the heart of Kuala Lumpur City Centre’s golden triangle with a gross development value is USD 1.2bln. The development comprises of (i) 2 towers of branded residences called YOO8 serviced by Kempinski; (ii) a 5-star luxury hotel, Kempinski Hotel & Residences KL, and (iii) a lifestyle retail quarters.
Joanne Kua holds a honours degree in B.Sc. in Economics from the University College of London, UK and a M.Sc in Management and Regulation of Risk from the London School of Economics, UK.
